We need to consult with young people about what they want in their clubs in conjunction with the outcomes other members of society expect a youth club to deliver. The following outcomes would be desirable:

To provide activities in order to strengthen identity and broaden horizons. Importantly, a strong sense of oneself is the best defence against unwanted or negative peer pressure.

A stimulating environment allowing the development of judgement through activities, some of them risky.

A rewarding experience of group working that utilises peer to peer support. We need to counteract the group work of gang culture which is not supportive long term and is sustained by adrenaline.

Help to discover where their interests lay and what their natural abilities are. Most young people in our society struggle to understand their needs and talents because they are constantly bombarded with advertising and cultural messages that link happiness only to consumption.

Black thin line drawing of a young person looking into a shop window. In the shop window is hanging on a clothes rail is a clothes cover saying what do you want to do, a cloud with dreams written in it, a person with help on her chest, a brain with skills written above it, a telescope with possibilties written in it and a watering can with the word support pouring out of it

The five outcomes of every child matters are important but we need to be more specific. Psychologists say we need four things for good mental health:

1  Security which includes food, shelter, warmth etc.
2  Community, and a sense of belonging.
3  Autonomy to grow and follow your instincts.
4  Some control and participation in your environment.
